Acrylic Acid (also known as propenoic acid) and denoted by the chemical formula CH2=CHCOOH, is a colorless, liquid organic compound consisting of a vinyl group and possessing tart smell. The conventional method to produce Acrylic Acid (AA) involves two-stage catalytic oxidation of Propylene to form acrolein and then crude (unrefined) Acrylic Acid. Players worldwide are devising novel technologies for manufacturing high acrylic acid yields with lesser raw material and energy consumption and having minimal impact on the environment. The crude Acrylic Acid is then purified through distillation steps to yield glacial Acrylic Acid. The most common use of Acrylic Acid is in the production of acrylic esters and resins, which are majorly used to produce coatings and adhesives. Crude AA is predominantly used to manufacture acrylate esters, such as butyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, and methyl acrylate which are principally used in coatings and paints. Glacial AA is widely used for the production of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) which are cross-linked polyacrylates with the supreme ability to absorb and retain more than 100 times their own weight in liquid and hence finding popular usage in baby diapers. Acrylic Acid is also used for manufacturing detergent polymers which are homopolymer polyacrylates and copolymers of polyacrylic acid and maleic anhydride used with both zeolites and phosphates in washing powder formulations.
