Solvents such as acetone, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), toluene, methanol, ethyl acetate and isopropyl alcohol are flammable liquids. Many give off ignitable vapour well below the temperatures that a storage shed or a parked truck reaches in the UAE summer. Poor storage is the most common cause of solvent fires and leaks, and it is almost entirely preventable. This guide is for managers and storekeepers in Umm Al Quwain and across the northern emirates.
Why UAE summer makes it harder
Flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapour to ignite. Acetone is about -20 C, MEK about -9 C, toluene about 4 C, methanol about 11 C and IPA about 12 C. All sit far below an ordinary summer day, so these products are always capable of igniting if a source is present. Heat also raises vapour pressure inside closed drums, which can bulge or push out a bung when a drum sits in the sun.
Store them in the right place
- Shade and ventilation. Keep solvents out of direct sun, away from hot walls and roofs. A shaded, well-ventilated store keeps drum temperature down.
- Separate from ignition sources. No welding, grinding, open flames, unprotected electrical fittings or smoking nearby.
- Separate from incompatible chemicals. Keep solvents away from strong oxidisers such as hypochlorite, and from acids and alkalis.
- Ground-level, firm floor. Use a bund or spill tray that can hold the volume of the largest container.
- Keep quantities small. Limit working stock near the production area and keep the rest in the main store.
Handle them with care
- Ground and bond metal drums and receiving containers during transfer to prevent static sparks.
- Use proper pumps or self-closing safety cans, not open buckets.
- Keep lids and bungs tight whenever you are not pouring.
- Label everything, including small decanted bottles. Unlabelled methanol or acetone in a water bottle has caused real accidents.
- Ventilate when pouring or cleaning. Do not work in closed rooms.
Transport
Do not leave solvents in a parked vehicle during the day. Secure drums upright, and use a vehicle and driver suited to flammable goods for larger loads.
Prepare for spills and fire
- Keep absorbent material, spill kits and the right type of extinguisher at the storage point.
- Train staff to evacuate first and fight only a small fire they can safely control.
- Keep the safety data sheet for every solvent in a known place, and know its first-aid section.
- Do not wash solvent spills into drains. Collect with absorbent and send for authorised disposal.
Check the rules for your site
Quantity limits, storage design and permits for flammable liquids depend on your location, licence type and building. Confirm requirements with Civil Defence and the authority that regulates your industrial area or free zone before building or changing a store.
Shelf life and rotation
Most solvents keep well in sealed original packaging. Use older stock first, check seals and containers for corrosion or bulging, and keep a stock log. Acetone and IPA absorb moisture from air if left open, which affects quality for precision work.

Frequently asked questions
Can I keep solvent drums outside?
Only in shade, with ventilation, bunding and protection from rain and sun. A covered, fenced store is better.
How many litres can I store?
The limit depends on your premises and licence. Ask your landlord or Civil Defence and keep within it.
Which solvent is safest?
None is safe in the sense of non-flammable. Choose the product that does the job and apply the same precautions to all of them.
