As crude oil is produced from a reservoir it contains water, inorganic salts, suspended solids and water-soluble trace metals. In refining process of crude oil, in order to reduce corrosion. fouling of equipment and preventing the poisoning of catalyst, these contaminants must be removed by dehydration process. In this process the demulsifier and water are added to crude, it is heated so that salts and other impurities are dissolved into the water, which is then settled in a tank and removed. Demulsifier reduces the interfacial tension between hydrocarbon and water, which help to separate water content and maximize the crude oil value and minimizing operating costs.
