Potassium Hydroxide, also known as lye is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula KOH and commonly referred to as caustic potash. It is available in several forms including pellets, flakes, and powders. It is used in various chemical, industrial and manufacturing applications. KOH is a highly hygroscopic solid which absorbs water from the air, thus making it a useful laboratory desiccant (drying agent). Aqueous KOH is used as the electrolyte in alkaline batteries. It is also used to manufacture soft soaps and liquid soaps by saponification.In food products, potassium hydroxide acts as a pH control agent, stabilizer, and food thickener.
